February 2010

Greetings!

Greetings!

We know that technology is ever moving forward, but some values remain the same. I suppose this is what can be said about Clarion. With changes in operating systems, development environments and hardware, people tend to think that if something is old, it is not usable any more. Look at Clarion - there might be many tools out there that can blow your mind, you still have to get back to the basics after you have been dazzled by the eye candy. That's where Clarion comes in - it's solid, it's manageable and it provides the goods. So my tip to you when someone asks you about the future of Clarion, tell them that value lies in the fruit and not in the hype and looks.

With this newsletter we are trying to move up a level with our presentation. In future you will see many changes in this format as well as on our web site.  We want to serve the Clarion community in Southern Africa and help enhance the experience of both the development community and the end-user community. Your suggestions on how to improve will be helpful, so please - stretch your mind and let us know.

New Format for Clarion Serial Numbers

Hand

Quietly SoftVelocity has started to introduce a new format in their serial numbers. Those of you that have received update e-mails for Clarion 7 may have noticed that a long GUID-type of serial number is also included in these e-mails. After some investigation it was found to be a serial number that is customised using the licence owner information.

When a customer wants to upgrade, it is required to provide the serial number for SoftVelocity to verify whether the upgrade can be done. In the process of providing the serial number, the customer needs to supply the serial number via e-mail. Retyping this long serial number into an e-mail will pose a challenge. A possible solution would be for the Clarion IDE to provide a "Copy Serial Number to Clipboard" button. Even better may be the capability to send the whole license information package from the Clarion IDE as an e-mail.

The bottom line is that SoftVelocity is likely to be busy upgrading their license management system. It may also be an attempt to limit fraud on license ownerships. We should in future expect changes on how licenses are managed. To avoid confusion and frustration, we suggest for each license owner to safeguard the e-mails received (containing the serial numbers) so that the license owner information is readily available.

Latest Clarion 7 Release

SoftVelocity released build 6813 of Clarion 7.1 on 18 February. Seeing that this build was released only 19 days after the previous build 6755, it proves that SofVelocity is commited to stablise Clarion 7 to ensure that all Clarion users can commit to migrating their existing applications to Clarion 7 without having to deal with migration or stability issues.
